Dear Youths,

I am happy to declare open the preparation for World Youth Day 2008. Along with your youth minister, Laurent Haché, and with members of the committee, I invite all young people from 18 years old to 35 years old to think seriously in participating in this unique and special experience.

The WYD celebrations will take place from July 10th to July 20th in Sydney Australia. During the first days, you will live in an Australian Catholic family and experience the faith and culture of these people. After, you will be driven to Sydney for the World Youth Days.

Youth from 18 to 35 years old interested and willing to live this great faith experience may register as of today and up to March 30th 2007. You may receive the registration form from your parish pastor.

In 2005, 30 youths and chaperons participated in WYD in Germany and came back with unforgettable memories and a desire to be closer to God. Such a pilgrimage with thousands of faithful youth encourages us to keep our faith alive in our daily lives. The theme chosen by his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI is “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witness.”

I hope that many young people from our diocese will answer the call to live this spiritual and cultural experience at WYD 2008.

Financing is a very important aspect in preparation for a group participating in WYD. Through financing we should keep in mind two important objectives:

Raise funds to realize this project
Value solidarity and friendship that will help to build group sprit

The total cost is generally raised by different parties:

personal contribution
group fund raising activities

Certain groups will probably ask support by their parish. The financial help will vary for one parish to another.

Personal contribution

Every pilgrim will be asked a personal contribution. This personal contribution will oblige the youth to make a firm decision before contributing. An amount of 800$ is required from each pilgrim. A person who wants to pay the complete cost of the pilgrimage to the WYD may do so. It is a personal choice.

Fund raising

Every amount of fund raising activities must entirely be given for participation of all youth in WYD.

All money raised must be sent to the Bathurst Diocese to Pauline Vienneau.

Cheques must be made to the order of:
ECR Journée Mondiale de la Jeunesse

We recommend that all youth participate in some fund raising activities even if he or she pays the total amount of his pilgrimage (to create friendship bonds between participants).

Here are examples of financing activities you can organize in your locality:

Lotteries
Spaghetti supper
Rallies
Bag Days
Fun raising sales – Chocolate ect.
Bingo

N.B. In New Brunswick you must obtain a licence for all activities for which the total amount of the prizes exceeds 500$.
If the prizes do not exceed 500$ you must get a licence free of charge. You can get all the information at the Ministry of public security.

Receipts for charitable donations

Donation must not be given in the name of the youth but rather addressed to ECR Journée Mondiale de la Jeunesse. All donations and fund raising money must be deposited in the diocese specific account for the WYD.

All donation of 10$ and up made to ECR Journée Mondiale de la Jeunesse will receive an income taxes receipt if requested by the donator.

During the holy year of redemption of 1983-84, John Paul II wanted to celebrate a jubilee moment with youth Accordingly he invited them to come to Rome!  The organizing committee did not count on more than 60 to 70,000 participants. To the surprise of all concerned, 300,000 showed up at the encounter! On the occasion of the International Year of Youth proclaimed by the United Nations, the pope issued a second invitation for Palm Sunday of 1985: once more a large number of youth accepted.

John Paul II decided that this concrete sign of the enthusiasm of youth wanted to send the message that “they want to meet, they want to share their experience, the desire to listen to a word, they want to look together to the future, they want to renew and confirm their search for God”. Thus, without any delay, John Paul II announced the institution of the World Youth Days on Ester Monday of 1985. In a sense it was the response of the young people who determined this step.

During the past twenty-three (23) years, we witnessed this remarkable procession of youth across several countries of four (4) continents.

During the last World Youth days in Cologne in 2005, Pope Benedict XVI has used the occasion of the closing Mass to declare the location of the next encounter.

At each of the World Youth Days the participants are invited to center their prayer, reflection and discussions around a particular theme.

During the WYD 2008 in Sydney the central theme will be:

“YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS COME UPON YOU; AND YOU WILL BE MY WITNESSES”    (Acts 1;8)

This theme is at the heart of the reflection of the international delegates.  The WYD intends to make known the face of Christ and the love of God.  The time remaining until the WYD 2008 may be profitably used for a local reflection about offering the faith to the younger generation.
